The women watched Lana leave, then Hazel said, “She doesn’t know what’s right for her.”

“Right,” Melva agreed. “She loves Blake and he’ll come to love her in time. That baby needs a father. We’ll just have to make sure they get together.”

“Yes,” Tommie Nell said, her eyes gleaming. “And make sure Ned doesn’t marry either. We’ll beat this legend yet!”

Cheers greeted her announcement and Hazel said, “Whether she likes it or not, we need to do this for her own good—for Lana and Tommie Nell and all the other single women in town. Are you okay with that, Serena?”

Serena nodded, her mouth set in a grim line.

Hazel smiled. “So we’re all agreed? We’ll watch those wily old coots to make sure they don’t scare Blake off, and do everything we can to get Blake and Lana together. We just won’t tell Lana what we’re doing.”

A chorus of affirmation sounded around her. “Good,” Hazel declared. “She’ll thank us later. So will our daughters and descendants and every single woman in Bachelor Falls from now to the end of eternity!”

Her ringing tones seemed to galvanize the society, but a lone voice spoke up from the back row. “Yes, but don’t tell Ona Mae. She’d ruin everything.”
